The concerto was a blast yesterday. Thank you to all who turned out to support me, and bravi to Chris Kim and the Chamber Orchestra. Great job!
I'll be playing a fun concert tomorrow, Tuesday, March 9, at 7 pm in Hockett recital hall at IC. This is the rescheduled date from the snowed out concert last week. Also joining Stetch for music of Stetch, Oxford, R. Schumann, and selections from the Great American Songbook will be Elizabeth Simkin, cello; Richard Faria, clarinet; Josh Oxford, piano; and Renato Hanriot, bandoneon. Hope to see you there.

I'll be playing my Grease Concerto Fantasy with the Cornell Chamber Orchestra at 3pm on Sunday in Bailey Hall, Cornell University. Hope to see you there!
More info here, and also, here are some program notes to read, if you are interested:
Increasingly we find the double bass featured as a melodic solo instrument. It has long been a passion of mine to share the lyrical, versatile sound of the bass with a larger audience, and the concerto fantasy seems an ideal vehicle to do so. But why Grease, of all things?
Well, a few years ago at a dinner party, I remarked that although I have often performed Frank Proto’s Carmen Fantasy, I have been surprised to learn that many of Bizet’s themes are unknown to younger audiences. Someone suggested (probably in jest) that I need to write my own fantasy on Grease, pointing to the kitchen speaker, through which a 1970’s radio mix had been delighting us all throughout the evening. The next morning I began to playfully toy around with some of the themes I remembered from the 1978 film, but before I knew it, I was arranging and then composing in earnest.
Some of this Grease Fantasy is entirely original material, with the themes barely recognizable. The Prelude begins this way, with the double bass alone, exploring all registers of the instrument before finding its way to the title theme featured in The Word. With the entrance of the orchestra the original Bee Gees material is used as a jumping off point for an improvisation and concerto antics, some traditional, some unexpected, such as the jazz saxophone language of John Coltrane.
Hopelessly Devoted, on the other hand, is essentially an arrangement of the Olivia Newton-John Oscar-nominated hit, re-harmonized, with some new material inserted. “Popular Music”, as it is called, is heard in the background all around us – it can be like wallpaper, a tapestry of sound we often take for granted. The concert hall, the orchestra, and the double bass as the solo voice offer a new perspective with which to consider this music. But this music also offers another lens with which to consider the concert hall experience, and especially the double bass.
Look at Me I’m Sandra Dee is treated as a scherzo. The whining theme (a mockery of a goody-two-shoes princess) is stated in the bass with falsetto harmonics, and followed by 5 variations, each variation increasingly fragmented and demented. The first few are in the bel canto style of virtuoso double bassist, Giovanni Bottesinni, the third and fourth move through Paganinni-like broken arpeggios in duet with solo violin to the final variation which features motivic fragments of a György Ligeti theme set over a harmonic texture inspired by Jaco Pastorious (with a wink to Proto and J.S. Bach along the way).
The One That I Want is transplanted from 1970’s disco into the rhythmic world of Afro-Cuban music: the low strings play tumbao basslines, sidestepping downbeats, the violins play the montuno patterns, and the violas can be heard tapping the ever-central clave timeline rhythm on the bodies of their instruments. With the exception of the first few measures, which feature some explicit melodic text painting (it’s electrifyin’), this is essentially a contrafact, a new melody over the harmonic structure of the original song. After a pizzicato improvisation, the soloist drives the work to its conclusion with a sort of arco-hand-jive setting of We Go Together replete with call and response exchange with the orchestra (shoo-bop sha whada whadda yippidy boom da boom).
The irony of this project is that I have come to understand that Grease is as unfamiliar as Carmen to most audiences.
Grease is the word
Grease is the word, is the word that you heard
It's got groove it's got meaning
Grease is the time, is the place is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009, 7:00 pm, Hockett Recital Hall:
Ithaca College Double Bass professor Nicholas Walker presents an evening of "Three American Sonatas with Jazz influence". Pianist Josh Oxford joins Walker in presenting German composer, Paul Hindemith's Sonata for Double Bass, a work composed while Hindemith was on vacation in Taos in 1949. While the influence of jazz is more veiled in Hindemith jewel of a piece, Frank Proto's Sonata 1963 includes a swinging pizzicato bass movement and a true mid-century "crossover" esthetic. Proto's sonata was influenced by Bill Evans and former Ithaca College student, Scott LaFaro, and was written the year Hindemith died. The evening concludes with a Trio Sonata by Nicholas Walker featuring fellow faculty members John Stetch, piano, and Elizabeth Simkin, cello. Walker's sonata features Stetch's lyrical solo improvisations in its premise, modern odd-meter contentious jazz groves, yearning cello and double bass melodic soliloquies, and a four-voice counterpoint fugue to bring the work to its affirming conclusion.
